I made food! I know, it' doesn't happen often these days -- at least nothing worth documenting. But you know my Pinterest boards are full of recipes dying to be tried so...I did.
Years ago, I had a thing with making bread. I used to make it rather often but like most delicious things, I stopped making it because I had a problem with eating way too much of whatever I made. Pfffff!
However, I decided to take the chance that this time, I could refrain. Mission....mostly accomplished.
I am obsessed with cinnamon anything. Anytime I go somewhere there is fresh baked bread, I will always always always choose the one with cinnamon. A sweet tooth I do have!
Plus, this gave me an excuse to try some of the fun stuff my sister Shelby got me for Christmas. She bought be a bunch of different plates and stuff so that when I do food photography, I'll have varied displays.
I'm a completely novice with my camera and food styling in general but I'm learning. I liked this set up and of course natural light is the only way to go. Unfortunately, I'm rarely home at times where it's available. Weekends are the only savior, especially in winter!
This treat was totally delicious and reminded me of monkey bread or pull-apart bread. It might look more complicated than it is. In all honesty, I could have eaten this entire thing in one sitting if I were hungry but I did not! Instead, after taking these photos, I cut it up into about six pieces to be enjoyed seperately. I enjoy anything you can pull apart (think those yummy layered biscuits from Pillsbury!)
And this was quick. You do have to let the dough rise for at least an hour (my first attempt a failure because my liquid wasn't hot enough) but the whole process is about 1 hour and 35 minutes. I think it could have risen more...but it worked.
So I'm gonna leave with you the ingredients and instructions but you will probably want to click over from where I got them to see exactly how it's done. And, yes, you will notice mine is a bit different but do whichever feels better to you!
Cinnamon Twist Bread
- 2 cups flour
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup lukewarm milk
- 1 envelope active dry yeast or 0.6 Oz
- 1/8 cup melted butter
- 1 egg yolk
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1/4 cup softened butter
- 4-5 tbsp sugar
- 3 tsp cinnamon
- Mix the yeast and sugar with the lukewarm milk and let it sit a few minutes while the yeast bubbles and foams up.
- Add the egg yolk, the melted butter, the flour and the salt, then knead the dough and shape into a ball.
- Place the dough in a large, greased bowl, then cover and place in a warm space and let rise until doubled in size (about 1 hour).
- Preheat oven to about 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Dust your work surface with flour, and roll the dough out to a thickness of 1cm.
- Spread the melted butter across all of the dough, then sprinkle the cinnamon and sugar mixture.
- Roll up the dough, and using a knife, cut the log in half length-wise.
- Twist the two halves together, keeping the open layers exposed as described in the photo tutorial. Give a round shape, then transfer to a baking tray (buttered or covered with cookie sheet).
- Top the remaining butter and sprinkle some sugar and cinnamon mixture. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, until the top is golden brown.
- Reduce the oven temperature to 350 degrees Fahrenheit after 5-10 minutes to stop it burning. Top with icing sugar mixed with water if you want, just sprinkle some sugar, or eat it like this.
